IUI – Intrauterine Insemination

IUI is sometimes referred to as Artificial Insemination (AI) and is a considered a relatively simple procedure aimed to help the sperm inseminate the uterus.

It’s one of the simpler and less invasive treatment options available to help you have a baby. As a result, IUI is often the starting point for people who are experiencing difficulties getting pregnant.

IUI

Why IUI treatment is considered a starting point for some couples?

The aim of IUI treatment is to increase the number of sperm that reach the fallopian tubes. The more sperm that reach the tubes – the greater the chance of fertilisation. However, the sperm still needs to work to reach and fertilize the egg on its own. IUI can be kept as natural as possible by working with your cycle and performing the procedure during your fertile period, or it can be done in combination with hormonal treatments that boost ovulation.

IUI Procedure at Bali Fertility Centre

During your IUI procedure, a speculum will be inserted into your vagina to see the inside of the cervix and to allow the insertion of a fine plastic tube (catheter) containing the prepared sperm, to pass through the cervix (neck of the uterus) into the uterus. Like a pap smear or cervical screening, it is a relatively painless and the procedure usually does not require any anaesthesia and should only cause mild discomfort.

  • Using fresh sperm in IUI treatment
      – If your cycle requires a fresh sperm, on the day of the in the male partner will be asked to provide a sample of semen. The sperm is ‘washed’ by our laboratory technicians. This process removes any hormones/proteins, debris, and dead sperm from the sample and makes the sample more concentrated to increase the chances for the sperm to meet the eggs in the ovaries.
  • Using frozen sperm in IUI treatment
      – If your cycle requires the use of frozen sperm, then the previously ‘washed’ and frozen sperm will be warmed and prepared for the IUI procedure.

After the procedure, you can resume your normal day to day activities. In about two weeks-time, you will return to the clinic to perform a pregnancy blood test.

IUI

When IUI is not a suitable treatment?

Your fertility specialist will provide you the best course of treatment based upon your circumstances. IUI may not be a suitable treatment when there is:

  • Absent, blocked, or damaged fallopian tube(s)
  • Severe male factor infertility, ie. no sperm, very low sperm count, poor sperm motility (movement), sperm defects
  • Severe endometriosis
  • Ovarian failure (menopause)

The benefit of the IUI procedure

During normal sexual intercourse, only a small amount of sperm makes it to the uterus and into the fallopian tubes where fertilization takes place. The benefits of the IUI treatment is that it inserts larger amounts of better performing sperm directly into a woman’s uterus, thus increasing the change of fertilization.
