Female Fertility Testing
One of the first steps your fertility specialist will take is checking whether you are ovulating. Your specialists may do this using an ovulation kit, a blood test (to check female hormones of oestrogen and progesterone ) and/or an ultrasound.
- Ovulation – Ovulation is when an egg cell is released from your ovaries. Follicles present in your ovaries contain immature egg cells called primordial follicles that mature into dominant follicles during your menstruation cycle- the phase of the female menstrual cycle that involves the release of an egg (ovum) from one of the ovaries.
- Determining your fertile window – Your fertility specialist tracks the follicles’ progress using ultrasound. The specialist may also order a series of blood tests to assess your levels of oestrogen and progesteron. This information helps determine your fertile window and the best time for you and your partner to have sex.
Assessing the health of your Reproductive Organs
- Pelvic Ultrasound – An ultrasound is a non-invasive diagnostic test which can give immediate information about your reproductive organs’ health- size, shape, and position.
- Female reproductive organs include the vagina, cervix, uterus, fallopian tubes, ovaries, other pelvic structures.
- A pelvic ultrasound can help find answers if you’re experiencing:
– heavy, irregular or infrequent periods in premenopausal women
– pelvic pain
– infertility
– fertility conditions like polycystic ovaries syndrome (PCOS) - HyCoSy – A more specialised type of pelvic ultrasound is the HyCoSy which is used to test your fallopian tubes and a Sonohysterogram, is used to examine your uterus.
Checking your Ovarian Reserve Anti-müllerian hormone (AMH) Test
- The AMH, anti- müllerian hormone, is a hormone produced by the follicles in the ovaries (which contain your eggs).
- A woman’s AMH levels indicate:
- – the number of eggs she has remaining.
- – provides the fertility specialist a gauge as to how many fertility years are in the future ahead.
- – While the AMH test is informs the specialist about the number of eggs a woman has left, it does not provide a measure of egg quality.
- Ovarian Reserve is the number of eggs left in your ovaries. Women are born with all the eggs they’ll ever have – around 2 million! But their quantity and quality deteriorate with age.
- A women’s ovarian reserve progressively declines from 35 years until menopause. For women experiencing premature menopause, their ovarian reserve declines even earlier.
When should you have the AMH test?
- You should test your AMH levels when you:
- – are having trouble conceiving.
- – want to check your ovarian reserve (the number of eggs in your ovaries) is at a healthy level for your age.
- – have other factors which may affect your fertility, for instance, undergoing chemotherapy.
- AMH blood test can be done at any time during your menstrual cycle. You can even complete the test if you’re on the contraceptive pill.
Fallopian Tubes Check
- The female fallopian tubes are where fertilization takes place–the fusion of the male and female sex cells. Your IVF and fertility specialist will investigate the health of your fallopian tubes to ensure they are not blocked or damaged. This is done and performed by:
- – x-ray, laparoscopic surgery, or a tubal patency test (dye test).
- Investigations can be completed at Bali Fertility Centre where we offer comprehensive fertility services, fertility options and treatments.
Male Fertility Testing
Semen Analysis
A semen analysis is laboratory test that examines sperm under a microscope. While a women’s age contributes to the primary cause of infertility, male fertility is the second biggest cause of infertility. If a couple has been trying to conceive without success, it best for the male to do a Semen Analysis and test for infertility too.
Male Sperm are the male’s reproductive cells and have a specific body shape containing a:
- Head – the sperm head stores the DNA to fertilise a woman’s egg.
- Tail – the sperm tail helps the sperm progress-swim through the woman’s reproductive system and reach the egg to fertilise it.
A semen analysis is the best way to check male fertility and provides information about sperm’s:
- morphology – the size and shape of the sperm
- motility – the sperm’s activity to progress and swim toward the female’s egg
- count – how many individual sperm are present in the sample
- vitality – how healthy the sperm are and their chance of survival
Sperm collection for Semen Analysis – Masturbation
In preparing for a semen analysis, sperm is generally collected by masturbation after 3-5 days of abstinence from ejaculation (sexual activity) unless otherwise advised. Our experts suggests that you should not abstain longer than 5 days of abstinence.
The Bali Fertility Center nurse team will provide detailed instructions about the process and procedures and possible outcomes well in advance to your visit to the clinic. Once collection is completed, the semen will be assessed to ensure that it is suitable for your treatment.
